TOCNYS started in October '18 with just 25 members and a bold dream... to become the premier Tesla Owners Club in the world. Now 700 members, 50 events, 8 test-drive weekends, 7 newspaper/radio/TV appearances, 5 legislation outreaches, and 2 new Tesla Service Centers later, it's safe to say that we've left the ground far below and are on our way.
You know that crucial and exhilarating part in SpaceX flights where the 1st-stage rocket boosters separate from the main spaceship/payload, which then ignites its own boosters to carry it far beyond into orbit? That's where we are at this moment as a club. Confused? Read on...
Having started 1 year ago, TOCNYS is a young club, but growing fast. So far it has been completely free to be a member, which is great as it has allowed us to grow quickly. However, it's not-so-great in that the club hasn't been self-funded and self-sustainable - it's basically been dependent on funding from one individual member in order to get off the ground and operate*.
Who is this mysterious rocket booster? It's not widely known among our members that from TOCNYS' beginning until now, the vast majority (~98%) of the club's funding has come directly through the generosity of TOCNYS President Patrick Ho personally. Other than that, online sales of TOCNYS products (most developed also at Patrick's expense) and 3rd party advertising have nominally contributed the remaining 2% of the club's revenue. While Patrick's investment on behalf of the club and its cause has been both crucial and noble, in order for TOCNYS to reach the next stage of astronomical growth, us club members ourselves now need to provide the fuel and get ignited!
* Expenses include employing one full-time Club Manager/Web Developer (myself, Joe Moore), website services & hosting, club marketing material (business cards, flyers, posters, signs, flags, etc), and other event-related expenses.
> From January 1, 2020 our current 1-level membership structure has split into 3 levels: 2 paid and 1 free. The new membership levels correspond to the different Tesla driving modes:
> Everyone's account has automatically defaulted to the free, Chill membership level. Do we hope everyone upgrades to one of the paid membership levels? You bet we do! But it wouldn't have been right to opt everyone into a paid level without permission.
> We strongly encourage you to upgrade to one of the paid membership levels. This can be done by going to your TOCNYS account profile page and clicking "Change" for your membership level.
