TOCNYS Goes to College on Long Island

February 11, 2020 10:39 AM | Joe Moore (Administrator)

Many TOCNYS members are retired, preferring to spend their days in quiet and relaxation. And then there's Long Island Member Keith S, who is busy organizing car show events, speaking on radio shows, and now dropping in on college classes to give presentations about Tesla!

When he recently learned that his alma mater Farmingdale State College has an automotive program that now includes EV's, Keith reached out and offered to share his experience and show off his Model 3. The  response was pretty much a green light...

After speaking with professor Tony G, it was decided that meeting with the Computerized Engine Controls Class - which covers all the electrical components of the car, diagnosis, and engine performance - would be a perfect choice. Keith's presentation successfully took place this past Friday, February 7.

At this point, let's hand off the narrative to Keith and let him describe the experience in his own words...

*****

"Well folks, I spent at least 3 hours with mostly captivated audience of fresh minds of interested students. We talked about everything Tesla and a few other topics non-related to Elon and his mission.

"Those included my first true blue retirement car, the Shelby GT350. But cooler, safer, quicker, and non ICE vehicle won out in the end.

All 26 students and teacher received TOCNYS.org club cards with the local showrooms number and my referral code# (6339) printed on it.

"Then a funny thing happened: some of the students wanted to go for a test ride. Well I'll have to ask teacher if it's legal/right to extend their wishes and comply. He said there," They're adults and can do what they like"...!! Well, I think my eyes lit up bigger than theirs. I took groups of 4 and myself,( which was right to say the least), for quick slow travel a few hundred yards through the campus. I stopped at a curved corner of the grounds and had shotgun rider countdown from 3-2-1, and before they got to 0, I was off. All I heard was cursing for next 3.5 seconds from them all. Safety first, I made sure all 4 were properly belted in, and their heads were firmly against the headrest.

"I don't know who enjoyed our time together more. Me, talking about my life and career or the students, whose minds were ready to soak up everything. Either way, all of us were motivated by the class.

In the end, I told the teacher anytime he wants me back, I'm there. He also told me as a previous Prius owner, he wants my car in his garage. Other students told me similar stories about how their parents wanted a BMW 440, but instead might opt for the P3D. I told them they wont regret their decisions... Well I've said enough, but I only hope that my experience can inspire other members to seek out colleges, high schools or universities.

Thx, Keith.

Love this! Well this inspired me for sure. I’ll be looking to do the same thing here in Rochester.
